banners around town. Christopher Colabello is an outfielder for the AAA Minnesota
Twins. He played for the Italy National Team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic
with fellow Italian-Americans San Diego Padres outfielder Chris Denorfia and
Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The Twins, in dire need of minor
league depth, signed 28-year-old Chris Colabello to play first base at Double-A
New Britain. Colabello never had played for a team affiliated with major league
baseball. Instead, he was a refugee from the independent Can-Am League.
When he signed with the Twins, he received no bonus and no promises. That was
OK with him. Colabello spent seven years toiling primarily with the Worcester
(Mass.) Tornadoes and hoping against all odds to someday get a chance. The
Twins gave him one. And in minor league camp last spring, he was wide-eyed when
former Twins manager Tom Kelly offered him pointers at first base. He also was
appreciative when any coach showed even the slightest interest.
